When I think of having patience, I think of it as being static. Stuck. Until something dynamic happens to take me out of waiting.
But, patience is not necessarily static. Sometimes it is both moving and waiting.
DEFINITIONS:
Patience: 1) bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint; 2) steadfast despite opposition, difficulty, or adversity. 3) not hasty or impetuous.
Static: 1) of or relating to bodies at rest or forces in equilibrium. 2) showing little change.
Dynamic: 1) marked by usually continuous and productive activity or change 2) of or relating to physical force or energy. 3) an underlying cause of change or growth.
Sometimes I feel like I am being put on hold— “Just wait patiently now.” My first reaction when hearing that from God is to resist. Do something to change things in my own will.
And, patience can be dynamic: “Steadfast despite opposition, difficulty or adversity—this being the underlying cause of change or growth.”
There is more going on with God working behind the scenes than I know. He is changing me in the waiting. And, others too. He is teaching me that, if I wait, I will see evidence of his hand that. I don’t see yet.
It’s much like being joyful in the midst of sadness. God is working behind the scenes for good even in the pain and sadness.
God is not finished. I am a work in progress. There is more work God has in store for me to do, if I just wait and pay attention. God is transforming behind the scenes—changing me as we go. His will, not mine, be done.
Pray.
Trust.
Wait.
See.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
